We are a global developer of Autonomous Driving (AD). We develop state-of-the-art technologies for car and vehicle manufacturers (OEM) in support of automotive safety, autonomous driving and driver assistance solutions.
According to the model defined by the automotive industry, there are three implementation models for autonomous driving. The same model can also be used outside the automotive industry:
The automotive industry is currently developing (Unikie is included as a contributor) an ISO23374 standard for managing autonomous driving.
First case (type 1) utilizes car sensors and systems that provide data for the car’s internal systems, which then is used to take action. This is the starting point for many companies heavily focused on the development of autonomous driving and its integration to public transportation. Essentially the car functions independently and it is given information of the actions to be taken from a trusted external source. This implementation model is heavy and requires an ability for the car systems to collect and handle large amounts of data.
Second case (type 2) utilizes sensors, data and systems from the environment to make decisions and activate functions. This operating model is widely available in cars and vehicles in serial production, since from the vehicle’s perspective this solution is light – all observation, data processing and actions are done in an external system (infrastructure) and basically the vehicle is being remote-controlled through a low latency telecommunications network. A solution, which functions in an infrastructure, is required to have the ability to process large amounts of data, depending on the application.
Third case (type 3) is a combination of the prior two. It requires further standardization, in order for manufacturers’ and third parties’ systems to function together on a case by case basis.
We have created commercially available AD technology platforms, which can be utilized in each case. However, our main focus is implementations of type 2, since their fulfillment is closest in terms of time and technology compatibility. Solutions that utilize type 2 can be used in closed areas, where the infrastructure and the number of vehicles can be controlled and where general road traffic laws and regulations do not apply. These implementations are for example:
- Parking areas and garages
- Industrial areas and factories
- Depots and other maintenance and charging areas (e.g. bus depot)
- Mining, port and farming areas
- Inventory and logistics centers.

HIGH LEVEL Autonomous driving BUILDING BLOCKS

We have implemented many of the functions, utilized by autonomous driving, on our Unikie AI Vision technology platform.
Fully autonomous vehicles controlled by infrastructure require multiple technical components that are compatible with each other, as well as embedded systems and information systems. Autonomous drive, even when done by infrastructure, is based on situational awareness, enabled by various data generating sensors. This data is then filtered and processed in order to get sufficient information for higher level components to make decisions about path planning, safety and driving.
Our AI Vision framework, on which our AD solutions are based, is a highly customizable framework, that supports all sensors and which processes data from LiDARs, cameras, radars, GPS and other sensors through open API’s. Many functions require successful sensor fusion of various data sources in order to produce robust and accurate conclusions. For example Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) can utilize data from Lidar, Radar and IMU and car data, like steering wheel angle. The best object detection accuracy is also achieved with Lidar-Camera sensor fusion.
Unikie’s AD solutions can be used either in-vehicle systems or edge/cloud computing system based solutions where sensors are located outside of the vehicle. We can also utilize third party data sources, like weather data, through connectivity.
