Collaboration with Oulu University of Applied Sciences created a new product and new jobs
The Oulu University of Applied Sciences auditorium hosted a festive moment at the end of January, when the rally car concept of the three-year Ultra project was presented to the public. The mechanical engineering staff of Oulu University of Applied Sciences and students, in collaboration with a few companies, built a car for research purposes to improve the energy efficiency and durability of vehicles. They also developed cloud data analysis for the car, which will be a significant part of future autonomous vehicle control systems.
The collection and analysis of cloud data was the responsibility of Unikie. In the project, Unikie explored the potential of utilizing data collected through a real-time drive data collection system as a platform for new product development. Thanks to the project, Unikie created a commercial product.
– Our cloud-based data collection platform Unikie Drive has its roots in this project. Without the project, we would not have started to develop the product. The project created a concept and a template for a product that is currently in commercial use, says Jani Väisänen from Unikie, who has been involved in OAMK project collaboration since 2016.
Important information for rally car drivers
In the Ultra project, Unikie Drive served as a data collection platform and focused on providing the driver with information on driving behaviour and vehicle use. The project focused on analysing the forces directed at the rally car, as well as information based on driver activity and car behaviour. By analysing the behaviour of a race car driver, it is possible to improve the driver’s driving skills and improve the car’s adjustments.
– The car was equipped with the necessary sensor technology, which collected real-time data to the cloud server. Unikie Drive analyses and visualizes the data it collects in an easy-to-read format. The interface clearly explained how the parameters behaved during test drives, making it easy to compare different test runs. This allowed the drivers to see themselves how to improve their own driving, Väisänen says.
The driver’s driving style was analysed in terms of, for example, braking location, use of the brake pedals, lock braking and use of accelerator pedals in curves. Important data collected for the analysis included: engine rotational speed, vehicle speed, vehicle longitudinal and transverse acceleration, accelerator pedal and steering wheel positions and rotational speed of different tires. In reality, the potential of Unikie Drive and data analytics in the rally world would be much wider than what the project focused on.
Unikie Drive is part of Unikie’s successful product offering for the automotive industry
As a result of the project, the development and application of the Unikie Drive system began and is now part of Unikie’s selection for automotive and heavy machinery industry.
Today, Unikie Drive is much more than you could imagine when the project began. Unikie Drive now offers a comprehensive and customizable tool chain for data collection, processing and analysis for cars, vehicles and intelligent machines. The Unikie Drive platform is capable of collecting and analysing and visualizing data in real-time from multiple sources.
– Unikie Drive is capable of storing any kind of data from the vehicle’s own or connected sensors, as well as from third party sources. The data is given a location and a time stamp, allowing analysis of, for example, driving performance. For example, we can combine vehicle sensor data from the driver with camera data and Suunto Movesense sensor data, Väisänen says.
Not only data processing, but also the user interface has developed tremendously, and with it the visuals. Selected data can be displayed in real-time through a monitor, or the data can be post-processed and analysed.
– In the original Unikie Drive, the visuals were only curves of different colours. Now, there are many ways to manipulate, filter, visualize, and examine the data in the user interface. In addition, data can be easily transferred to third party tools, in particular selected custom analytics tools. In addition, the data collected by Drive can be combined with other products, allowing, for example, the simultaneous display of the driving route, driver, driver’s heart rate and vehicle speed, and so on, Väisänen says.
