One of the hottest current topics is self-driving vehicles. Driving is undergoing a change and the whole attitude towards moving seems to be in a transition. Optimizing the commute and boosting one’s time management via intelligent travel is beginning to be a thing of today.
As you may know, Finland has a history and reputation in developing state-of-the-art technologies, and we have several companies operating in the field of heavy equipment, automotive technology and autonomous vehicles. At the moment, we are working with the European OEM´s with ADAS/AD functionality and we are getting really good results. The Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are electronic systems that help the vehicle driver to drive more safely, or enable semi-automated or fully automated driving (AD).
The building blocks of ADAS systems can be grouped into four building blocks:
- Sensing: wide array of sensors constantly gathering information from the surroundings, conditions and the vehicle (cameras, radar, LiDaR, etc.)
- Detection: Identify and classify sensed information (detect people, road signs etc.)
- Acting: Act on processed insights through automated control of the vehicle
- Connectivity: Real-time or processed information from external services or other vehicles (weather, traffic, localization, route planning)

Security and quality standards
We initiated the security audit process earlier this year, at the request of our client. During the entire 9-month long process, Unikie’s operations were audited and were determined to meet the highest standards.
The industry-specific security audit comprised four different operating segments. The assessment carried out at Unikie included a wide-ranging assessment of the company’s information security, third-party relationships – such as with subcontractors and partners, personal data protection and secure handling of prototypes. Close to five hundred details were monitored. All have now been documented and Unikie’s operations must be fully compliant, also with regard to potential subcontractors. Operations are monitored and continuously developed.

Collecting and utilizing data
Unikie Drive is a cloud-based data collection platform that gathers data from various sensors and then analyzes and visualizes the collected information. Drive can be set to collect all location-based data in, for example, moving vehicles, but meaningful additional information can also be derived from third sources such as moving or positioned sensors.
Machine learning and computer vision
Unikie AI Vision is an application that uses the data it receives from sensors to form a 3D model of its environment. The application can identify objects and people in its surroundings and can estimate, among other things, an object’s direction and velocity. It can observe the environment, learn behavioral patterns based on these observations, and react to a similar observation in a desired fashion.
Automatic LiDAR test data set generation
Unikie Simulator is a multi purpose tool that makes LiDAR and autonomous technology development easier. It can simulate different kinds of environments (e.g., city, highway, harbor, mine). It also provides realistic physics and functionality for cars, heavy machinery, and ships.
