Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication is the passing of information from a vehicle to any entity that may affect the vehicle, and vice versa. It is a vehicular communication system that incorporates other more specific types of communication as V2I (vehicle-to-infrastructure), V2N (vehicle-to-network), V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle), V2P (vehicle-to-pedestrian), V2D (vehicle-to-device) and V2G (vehicle-to-grid).

The main motivations for V2X are road safety, traffic efficiency, and energy savings.

Road safety enhancements enabled by 5G

5G-Safe aims to improve road safety, optimize logistics and road maintenance, and contribute to the future of autonomous driving by delivering novel focused and time-critical services to vehicles, road users, and 3rd party organizations in a reliable and scalable manner.

5G-SAFE aims to reach the set goals by studying and developing the overall solution based on selected use cases representing the main usages and benefits of the system. The initial use cases, summarized in the table below, have been defined during the 1st phase of the project in cooperation with industry partners in order to ensure their relevance.

Also, external sources, such as ongoing standardization and EU H2020 5G PPP activities related to the automotive industry, were used as input to work on security solutions that integrate seamlessly over different infrastructures such as Cloud Computing, Wireless Sensor Networks and Mobile technologies.

The goal is to enable the Industrial Internet, where even small companies can easily deploy secure services operating across different infrastructures.

CHALLENGE

  • Effectively operating and safe road network is an essential requirement for a modern society. EU has a vision of close to zero casualties in traffic by 2050.
  • The current technological transformation towards connected and increasingly autonomous vehicles can help in improving road safety and maintenance.
  • So far, the lack of sufficient communication media and scalable data processing solutions have hindered the wide-scale adoption of advanced vehicular services.

SOLUTION

  • Intelligent connectivity and data aggregation solutions for vehicles, fleets, and sensors using current technologies (e.g. ITS-G5, LTE) and 5G enhancements.
  • Distributing the service architectures and data processing closer to the network edge (e.g. ETSI MEC) for scalability and low latencies.
  • Enhancing the situational awareness and intelligence of automated vehicles with novel services relying on sensor data and information from multiple vehicles and other sources.

BENEFIT

  • Improvements to road safety and optimizing road maintenance (e.g. snowplowing, sanding, repairs) and logistics through local and focused information and alerts.
  • Enabling autonomous driving in diverse conditions via real-time and reliable transmission of safety critical control information.

IMPROVING SAFETY

Well-established vehicle sensors, e.g. radar sensors, cameras and tachometers already provide information about distances to surroundings and velocities, but sharing information from the vehicle to everything also allows knowledge of critical traffic situations and collisions so that the driver or the car can initiate countermeasures to avoid accidents or create a better traffic flow.

Vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communications systems require a stable wireless link to maximize the throughput of information, which increases driver safety. To ensure a good wireless link, receivers must be able to detect signals even under the worst conditions, e.g. low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), poor error vector magnitude (EVM) and heavy fading.

Replicating these conditions in a lab requires high-performance test equipment capable of generating/analyzing the V2X signals, the required fading conditions and satellite signals for highly accurate positioning.

More than 1.3 million people die on the roads every year. Safe, automated driving supported by Vehicle to Everything communications, or V2X, will improve driving comfort and has the potential to save lives by preventing many traffic accidents.
