Digital transformation is an educational process. First you start with learning about yourself – what and how you do.
Data are the gold in this digital era. Your assets, recipes, production processes, quality information, customer base etc. are your mine. How to harvest and yield the most?
1. Map all your processes!
Many articles, books, videos, courses and tools are available to describe the details. As there are relations between the individual actions done in your organization almost like a neural network, you should…
2. Avoid shortcuts!
The current process and asset description are base for any improvement you expect from your digital transformation. If you leave out any part of your organization, you will not get the expected results. Best way to avoid shortcuts is by moderated discussion and review by several people involved in the specific parts. Do not describe the ideal status, describe the reality no matter how good or bad it is. In order to make the process map complete and useful…
3. Describe it for externals!
With high probability, your digital transformation will be done with help of someone unaware of your core business. Someone who speaks completely different “working field language”. This makes it even more important to focus on creating clear, understandable descriptions. To avoid future confusions, as graphical descriptions as possible are recommended.
The process and asset description must contain all the machines and action you do in your production, all the tools you are using in providing your services, complete lifecycle from the time you approach your customer for the first time until the warranty period is over.
Don’t forget you are doing digital transformation, so description of the systems you are using on the input and output side is needed as well.
Those steps are possible with your own resources if you have someone interested in process management, even better if you have ISO or other national process-oriented standards. You can also outsource these tasks to external consultants, moderators and lecturers depending on the way you want to educate your organization.
