Unikie is an international software engineering and innovation company, awarded for its ambitious internationalization efforts by Alexander Stubb, the President of Finland. Unikie works with global clients around the world, helping top-tier companies develop innovative solutions with cutting-edge technology.
However, did you know that out of the 500+ professionals at Unikie, some 50 software engineers currently work from Poland?
We talked with some of those experts to learn what’s happening in Poland and how they feel about working for Unikie.
Exciting Projects for International Customers
Unikie provides its customers with software engineering services, focusing especially in the automotive industry, as well as cybersecurity, intelligent industry and devices. Unikie also develops its own solutions for automated vehicles. In Poland, most software engineers work in customer projects, while some contribute to Unikie’s own solutions.
One of the engineers is Mariusz Irla, a Quality Assurance Consultant, working for a US-based Electric Vehicle manufacturer. Mariusz is tightly integrated to the customer’s team that is developing voice assistance for an Android Automotive based in-car infotainment system.
“What makes my work exciting is the product itself, to me it feels like we’re making history. The customer team is very passionate about what they do and eager to help consultants, too. I get to use new technologies, like AI and cloud, every day,” says Mariusz.
Customer projects come in different shapes and sizes – there are opportunities for both people who want to experience shorter projects as individual contributors and for those who want long-term stability in a bigger team.
Project Manager Jakub Kwintal works for a global US-based semiconductor company. This project is completely managed by Unikie with a larger team that works independently.
“Independence gives our team freedom to plan our work and perform it the way we see best. We are the experts who recommend the best solutions to our customers and make sure we deliver on time and in the agreed scope,” Jakub points out.
Poland on a Growth Trajectory
Unikie Poland was established in 2020 and today the team has approximately 50 software professionals representing a wide range of roles in software development. However, the team is about to get a lot bigger.
“Our customers are happy with our work and new, exciting projects loom in the horizon. I would not be surprised if we add dozens of professionals to our team within the next year,” says Country Manager Jedrzej Okonowski.
There’s one thing that is common for nearly all members of the Polish team – seniority.
“Unikie wants to have top talent that we deliver to our customers extremely fast. We do our best to attract experienced and enthusiastic people who want to learn more and work with leading products and technologies,” Jedrzej continues.
Unikie’s Poland office is located in Szczecin but most of the consultants work fully remote.
“I’m personally an office guy and like to meet people in person, but having freedom to arrange your work is important. The company clearly trusts us and lets us focus on our work: there’s no babysitting, bureaucracy or noise that disturbs you,” says Marcin Marcinek, Software Engineer for Unikie.
What Makes Work Exciting?
Senior software professionals are in high demand and have more power over the terms of their contract. Attractive salary and flexible employment are important, but seniors also look for opportunities to develop their skills and do meaningful work.
So, what motivates the team in Poland?
“For me, the exciting part is the technologies we are working with. One example is the Zephyr real-time operating system, the future of embedded devices,” says Jakub Kwintal.
For Mariusz Irla, the excitement comes from being part of the historical change that is written today.
“My highest personal passion is in motorcycles, but working with electric cars is really interesting. Seeing the innovative products you work with in the streets and being part of that industry is a huge encouragement,” Mariusz points out.
What makes work fun varies from person to person. While others enjoy straightforward clarity, others thrive on gradually making sense of complexity.
“I love the detective work involved in learning completely new tools and processes. For me, it is important to be open minded, talking to people and asking questions – finding clues that put the puzzle together,” Marcin Marcinek explains.
