Unikie has worked with the Port of Gävle on the Time Slot Gävle project, which enabled enhanced foresight, fuel savings and cutting CO2 emissions - leading to a more efficient and sustainable maritime transport system.

“Through the Energy Optimized Port Cluster 2030 program, Port of Gävle works together with terminals and partners to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. Vessels on their way to Port of Gävle can now choose to reduce their emissions during the sea journey from the previous port by ”eco-driving”. This has been possible since February 2023 thanks to a unique queuing system, Time Slot Gävle.” Read more.

BACKGROUND

Revolutionizing Maritime Sustainability

In today’s world, where environmental sustainability is paramount, the maritime industry faces significant challenges. The need to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining efficient logistics is a pressing issue.

This is where POLO – Port Activity App comes into play, offering a groundbreaking solution as demonstrated by the success of the Time Slot Gävle project.

CHALLENGE

Need for a transformative approach

Maritime transport, a critical component of global trade, has long struggled with balancing operational efficiency and environmental impact. Traditional shipping practices often lead to excessive fuel consumption and high CO2 emissions.

Recognizing this, the Port of Gävle identified a need for a transformative approach to manage ship arrivals and departures, aiming to reduce environmental footprints without compromising on efficiency.

PROCESS

TIME SLOT GÄVLE

To address this challenge, the Time Slot Gävle project was initiated, utilizing and building a completely new module on top of POLO – Port Activity App. Unikie’s software facilitated the development of new working methods and regulations for the port. The core innovation allowed ships en route to Gävle’s quays to opt for reduced speeds. This strategic slowing down, synchronized through POLO, enabled vessels to minimize fuel usage while remaining on schedule.

The project was developed according to our agile way of working, which is a necessity when implementing something completely new that has not been done before. This means smooth communication and constant feedback to and from the business need and technical development team.

This delicate and sometimes tricky equation is something we at Unikie embrace with joy and respect. We take pride in asking the right and hard questions, which sometimes means challenging the customer.

SOLUTION

Transforming Maritime Efficiency and Sustainability

The implementation of the new module on top of the POLO platform proved to be a game-changer. Ships could save significant amounts of fuel, drastically cutting CO2 emissions. This not only benefited the environment but also translated into cost savings for shipping companies.

Furthermore, the POLO platform provided all stakeholders – from port authorities to shipping companies – with enhanced foresight and planning capabilities. This improved coordination and predictability in ship arrivals, leading to a more efficient and sustainable maritime transport system.
